Super Seven #15 Tom Crabtree

May, 21

engineering, insights, quantum, software, team, work

In the fifteenth of our Super Seven Questions Series we profile our Business Development Manager, Tom Crabtree. Tom joined us in October last year and brings with him a wealth of experience, insight and energy.

1.  Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a born and bred Bristolian who spent my 20s living in Portsmouth running pubs. Having come back to my home city to start a ‘real’ career, I’ve enjoyed working in the construction, logistics and financial sectors before becoming the latest recruit in the Quantum World. On returning to Bristol, I was also lucky enough to meet my wife and we’ve been blessed with 3 beautiful daughters; the most recent of whom is just six weeks old. I’m thoroughly outnumbered at home, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

2.  What do you do in KETS?

I’m the Business Development Manager, working alongside Jake and Chris in the Commercial team. My role involves ensuring we’re aiming for the right targets; maintaining relationships with current clients and reaching out to potential new ones. It’s all about spreading the good word of KETS.

3.  What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

I love strategy, new tech and talking to people! We’ve got a really good team doing amazing things at KETS, so it’s easy to bring the enthusiasm everyone has to our clients. I’ve started my job working from home due to COVID, which could have been a really tricky experience, but the KETS community has been welcoming and made the transition into a new company a truly pleasant experience.

4. What inspires you?

Seeing how people can keep going through adversity; this year has been so difficult for so many and I’m in awe of people’s ability to keep the positivity flowing. KETS has grown despite the pandemic and that is definitely in part due to the team’s attitude.

5.  What advice would you give someone wanting to get into Business Development?

You need to be an expert at multi-tasking, communicating and analysing situations quickly. Find the company that has a product you believe in and people you can work beside and you’re on to a winner. I try to get involved in so many different things throughout the company to ensure I understand it and its and products from every angle. You never know what a client will ask and you don’t want to be left without an answer!

6. What do you do when you’re not at work?

When I have any spare time, it’s focussed on my family – we love going on walks and exploring the area around our new home. I’m doing a lot of running as well and am in training for an off-road (socially distanced) marathon. Due to the current pandemic, I’m not able to do so much of seeing friends and playing cricket at my local club; both of which I’m keen to reinvigorate. I do manage to follow Coventry City and Leicester Tigers on tv, and hope to get to the grounds this season, when allowed.

7. What was the last book you read?

Just before I joined KETS, I started to re-read one of my favourite books; The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy. It’s a great read and one that I know I’ll continue to re-read throughout my life. During my first week, I realised how apt it was that I’d chosen to re-read it at this time – without realising it, so much of the story is based on quantum mechanics, including the Heart of Gold’s improbability Drive. It was meant to be.
